At Matthew Arnold Primary School, we believe that every child can achieve success in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient and curious mathematicians who enjoy exploring mathematical ideas and applying their knowledge in a wide range of contexts. Through the NCETM Teaching for Mastery curriculum in Years 1–6 and Mastering Number in Reception, we ensure that all pupils develop deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and the ability to reason and solve problems confidently.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced using the NCETM and Oak National Academy resources, enabling pupils to build secure mathematical knowledge over time through small, coherent steps. Learning is underpinned by the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, carefully chosen representations and mathematical structures that support children in making connections and developing secure mental models. We believe that mathematics should be accessible to all learners through high-quality adaptive teaching, rather than differentiated expectations, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed whilst providing appropriate challenge.
